RIP KYLE DOHERTY: 19-year-old Kyle Doherty body was discovered in a utility shaft or gap between two buildings, said police.

British Footballer Kyle Doherty, aged only 19, reported missing on the night of New Year, was found dead in the city of Manchester.

East Fife Football Club have said: "Our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of @StenhousemuirFC player Kyle Doherty. Tragic news."

Kyle Doherty, 19, who played for Stenhousemuir FC's youth team, was last seen at Suede nightclub in Longworth Street near Deansgate at about 13:35 GMT on New Year's Day.

Greater Manchester Police said the body of a 19-year-old man was found in the same street at about 22:00 GMT.

Initial reports suggested 19-year-old Kyle Doherty had been reported missing from Suede nightclub in Manchester at 01:45 on New Year’s Day and his body was found in a courtyard at the club at 10pm on Thursday.

However, Greater Manchester Police later clarified that his disappearance had only been reported to them at 1:45pm on New Year’s Day – just over eight hours after his body was found.

Kyle Doherty friends posted tributes to ‘lovely’ and ‘hilarious’ Kyle, known as ‘Doc’, on Facebook and Twitter.

Many also changed their profile pictures to images of him.

Kyle, lived with his firefighter dad Kevin and mum Sharon in Johnstone, Renfrewshire.

Kyle’s friend Ryan McKenna, 19, was with the teenager on the night out. On Twitter, Ryan paid tribute to his pal.

He wrote: “Celebrating the life of an absolute legend.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death, but officers are still investigating how he died. One line of inquiry is he may have accidentally fallen from a terrace.

The teenager has not been formally identified, but his next of kin have been informed.

The club told the Manchester Evening News it was assisting police with the investigation and offered its condolences to the man’s family.
